  • Cinedans at Eye Film Museum & Online 1 IJpromenade Amsterdam, NH, 1031 KT Netherlands (map)

Gabri Christa’s new film KANKANTRI will be presented as part of Cinedans FEST ’24.

The 20th anniversary of Cinedans FEST ’24  will take place 20 - 24 March in Eye Filmmuseum and 20 - 31 March online at Cinedans WEB.

On Saturday March 23rd, Gabri Christa’s KANKANTRI will be presented in-person at Eye Film Museum, Cinema 1 as part of “Breaking the Chains,” which will take place from 17:00 - 19:55 incl. short break and Q&A. Both films are part of the Cinedans Special Black Dance Matters.

In Breaking the Chains Cinedans presents films with postcolonial themes from different countries and (historical) perspectives. They portray ancestral rituals, struggles for independence, spirituality and how the effects of slavery persist into the present. Dance, song and music are traditionally deeply rooted and vital aspects of African culture, uniting the mind, body and soul. They form an essential part of cultural life and identity and migrate through time and space. They carry symbolic meaning, are catalysts for spiritual transformation and provide access to sacred spaces. Today in the diaspora, dance and ritual still play a crucial role in the process of healing, reconciliation and liberation. The screening includes a short break and is accompanied by a performance of José Tojo, artistic leader of dance school Kula Skoro, theater maker and apinti drummer / percussionist, and followed by a Q&A.
