ABOUT THE COMPANY:
Gabri Christa and Greg Tate created Burnt Sugar/Danz in 2002 after Christa was exposed to the music of Tate’s Burnt Sugar Arkestra–a multi-genre ensemble greatly inspired by Butch Morris CONDUCTION system for improvising orchestras. Their recombinant project, Burnt Sugar/Danz, draws upon the cream of NY music, choreographic and dance-performance talent to create innovative, never-before-seen works, live, and in real time. Adopting Morris’ baton gestures and hand-sign vocabulary to dance, Burnt Sugar/Danz presents an alchemical blend of spontaneously composed music and choreography. The results are consistently exciting for both participants and audience. The project has performed @The United Nations, Central Park Summer Stage, Symphony Space and at Barishnikov Arts Center (2010) where they were Artist in Residence.
Eclectic clarinetist Don Byron visits the hall of American spiritual icons when his New Gospel Quintet interprets the work of Thomas A. Dorsey, the father of black gospel music. Burnt Sugar/Danz conjures up spirits from other dimensions; Gabri Christa’s all-star company of dancer/choreographers form a freewheeling improvisational bond with theorist-conductor Greg Tate’s funky hoodoo orchestra. As a finale, an expanded version of Byron’s group joins forces with the dancers in an Ailey inspired dance called R Glitch.
