When you shake your family tree a few Jews fall out” Surinamese proverb

I started the preparations for the new film Synamo at the end of 2009.  The film is a fictional half hour short about three generations of Surinamese Jewish women based on facts about this dwindling, Creole Jewish community, and the oldest continuing community in the Americas.

Two years later, I am finally completely ready to start.  Somehow other projects, both in dance and film, came through and this film, so dear to my heart, was pushed back again and again. I know that the time it took to come to this point will make for a better film as my understanding of this community and the large Jewish community in general has deepened.

It is almost 10 years ago…

…that I first visited the Neve Shalom Synagogue in Paramaribo. I was in Suriname at the time to do research for my Guggenheim Fellowship on Winti and Afro-Surinamese dance, and staying with Oom Wim, my godfather who is now Bishop Mgr. Wim de Bekker of Suriname. Read the rest of this entry »
